Within an hour of me taking this picture, the snow had all melted off the maple. The photo was taken mid day. I stoped the camera down to make everything dark. Then I used a wireless flash (580EXII) to light the tree.

Mount Rainier at Reflection Lake
I'm going through my old digital photos. I took this in about July of 2001.
Most of my old digital photos are just snaps with mediorcre framing, a boring subject or poorly lit. It took me a long time to learn how to work with the blues, grays and greens that are everywhere in Washington State.
This is the first photo that I took and that I loved. I toyed with cropping out the rocks in the lower left. I left them in because it makes the photo more real. Anyone looking at this photo, could go to reflection lake and find the exact spot where I took this picture. And, if the wind and light were right, they could take one of their own.

chandelier
'm experimenting with flash photography for in-store product shots. The idea is that I flash light the product I'm shooting in such a way that the back ground fades to darkness. This way I can shoot at the store without re-arranging things to get a plesant background.
It's hard to do without making harsh over lit shots. Most of the shots that I took today didn't turn out. This picture is one of the few that did.

Fish WIne
I've had this bottle of wine for years. It was given to me as a house warming gift for not better reason than "The bottle is shaped like a fish!"
Figurine
Mark is going through his collectables, figuring out what he wants to keep, and what he wants to ebay. Shot with two remote 580 ex ii'S to camera right and left. There is no back ground. I used the flash to overwhelm the ambiant light.

clockface
One thing that suprizes me about flickr is the number of specialy groups. If I take a photo of something specific like a bottle, or glass, or this clock for example, then I frequently end up hearing from a group administrator saying "I run a flickr group dedicated to clocks" (or bottles or glasses or whatever) "would you care to post your pic and join my group?"
To prove my point I will search flickr groups for a random word. How about "yogurt" And I find... three groups dedicated to pictures about yogurt. Not one! Not Two! But three! There is "Making Your Own Yogurt," "Frozen Yougurt." and just plain old "Yogurt."
Maybe I will set a goal of finding and posting a pic to a new group every week.

Hoodsport 2005 Cab-Sauv
I always enjoy wine from the Hoodsport Winery. It's one of my secret finds. They offer great case prices so I pick up two or three cases when I'm there.
This particular bottle had a little too much tannin for my tastes-- that didn't stop me from drinking two thirds of it.
Now, if I could control the flair from the flashes, this would be a great photo.

Lake Washington
We tried to spend an afternoon at Seward Park-- it started raining hard so we left early.
This photo shows the lake from the Park all the way to Renton.

crystal candy dish
I am suprized how much a flash can completely transform lighting. A flash is very brief and very bright. For one one thousand of a second it is as bright than the sun. Room lights don't register at that speed.
Armed with this knowledge, you can use a flash as more than another light. Set the camera to high speed and the image is all flash. Lower speed-- your image is a combination of flash and ambiant.

Accident
at 2 am in the morning a driver in diabetic shock smashed into a retaining wall, a traffic sign and some trees before before coming to rest in the mud.
