I am suprized how much a flash can completely transform lighting. A flash is very brief and very bright. For one one thousand of a second it is as bright than the sun. Room lights don't register at that speed.

Armed with this knowledge, you can use a flash as more than another light. Set the camera to high speed and the image is all flash. Lower speed-- your image is a combination of flash and ambiant.

Most of my old digital photos are just snaps with mediorcre framing, a boring subject or poorly lit. It took me a long time to learn how to work with the blues, grays and greens that are everywhere in Washington State. This is the first photo that I took and that I loved. I toyed with cropping out the rocks in the lower left. I left them in because it makes the photo more real. Anyone looking at this photo, could go to reflection lake and find the exact spot where I took this picture. And, if the wind and light were right, they could take one of their own.
